Fela — Lagos Baby 1963 to 1969 ...
NEW DOUBLE CD
Lagos Baby 1963 to 1969
Seminal sounds from the earliest years of Afro Funk – rare 60s material from Fela Kuti, most of it recorded long before he achieved international fame!
The styles here are often different than Fela's longer funky work of the 70s – shorter tunes that revel in a variety of African modes – including highlife, jazzy grooves, and some straighter soul-based work! The sound's often quite raw – partly due to the age of the recordings, partly due to the hard percussion and raspy horn work – and the tracks all pack a hell of a lot of punch, especially as some of Fela's more complicated rhythm styles start to appear on the second half of the set. Some tracks are preformed with Fela's early Koola Lobitos group, and the set also features material from a rare live 10" album too! 2CD version features a whopping 39 tracks in all –
with titles that include "Bonfu", "Onifere No 2", "Awo", "I Know Your Feeling", "Everyday I Got My Blues", "Waka Waka", "Lai Se", "Ako", "Araba's Delight", "Wa Dele", "Abiara", "Mi O Mo", "Se E Tun De", "VC 7", "High Life Time", "Signature Tune", "Lagos Baby", and "Omuti Soul".
