This is a release by the HGBS label, available as limited edition big size format: Completely new standards were set with this recording in 1972. “Knirsch” became cult and still is until now, almost 40 years after its release. A unique example for the successful interweaving of jazz, rock, avant-garde and electronic.
The musicians: US guitarist Larry Coryell, German keyboarder Wolfgang Dauner, British drummer Jon Hiseman, US percussionist Fred Braceful and German bassist Gunter Lenz. It was foremost Dauner’s musical handwriting which influenced this production and which was in 1972 released on the legendary MPS label.
As its first issue, the Villingen HGBS Musikproduktion in succession of MPS will release the border surpassing masterpiece CD with of course its eye catching cover of the wide open dentures. “Knirsch” lost nothing of its initial musical stimulus. And for the primarily young generation, it may be a totally new discovery. Although some may know at least one title, the final track “Yin”. As this one (an honour not too many German composers experienced) was covered by Larry Coryell on his recording “Introducing The Eleventh House”.
The group on „Knirsch“ was named „Et Cetera“ by Dauner and he explained it as follows: „We want to make spontaneous music. Music, created at the very moment of playing and allowing its development as we go on. We let it continue on and on, but it must sound alive. We despise categories and limits.”
„ ‚Knirsch’ is good, more than that: it’s excellent, since it is a mix of electronic and rock which is at all times spontaneous,“ was then written by the magazine „fab“.
Additional critics of the seventies:
„I have rarely experienced a group with such an extensive range. From atonal to jazz and on to pop music versions – practically everything is contained here.”
„Jon Hiseman and Larry Coryell fitted on impulse and extremely well into Dauner’s and the other musicians’ playing while influencing the music essentially, considering they played only a few mutual live concerts together and the studio dates were also kept short. Here, a dynamic fusion of jazz, rock, space and electronic elements was created.
