First time on CD for two classic soundtracks from Krzysztof (Christopher) Komeda: Le Depart and Bariera. Komeda, despite his death in 1969, still has a world-wide following amongst film music and Jazz aficionados.
His work here is for two films by Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski.
Le D‚part was shot in Belgium and starred Jean-Pierre L‚aud and tells the story of a young boy who dreams of entering a car race-but has no car! The soundtrack in many ways is an integral part of the film as it propels the action along.
Coupled with this, is Komeda's assured score for an earlier Polish picture called Bariera, a darkly humorous and cynical view of Polish post-war life. The director's work is highly acclaimed, and the booklet for this release features an in-depth illustrated essay on his work. Text is in both English and Japanese.
"Incestuous is not really the right word to use. But the ménage-a trois that was Roman Polanski / Jerzi Skolimowski/Krzysztof Komeda was bound to be a legend in the making from the start.
These three super-ambitious and highly motivated talents grew up together in Poland where they each studied film and all shared a love for Western music in general, and jazz in particular! Komeda worked very closely with Polanski in the majority of his film output; only tragically cut short by a mysterious car accident in Hollywood that left him in a coma, passing away in Poland to where his wife had brought him back shortly afterwards. Renowned for his shattering score for Rosemary’s Baby (Harkit Records CD HRKCD 8135), and Fearless Vampire Killers, Cul-De-Sac & Knife In The Water (Harkit Records HRKCD 8137), his music seemed to bring a special quality to Polanski’s films that would somehow seem much shallower without it. Indeed, the two are inextricably and—how shall we put it—Polish-ly linked.
The lesser-known, but now being rediscovered once again for a new generation, are the directorial works of Jerzy Skolimowski. In our latest release of music by Komeda, we are delighted to bring you his quirky contribution to Skolimowski’s Le Départ. Filmed in Belgium, it stars Jean- Pierre Léaud as a young hairdresser’s assistant who dreams of entering a car race. Only one problem. No car! The film follows his endeavours to participate, stealing a car and unintentionally, at the same time, falling in love with his girlfriend who manages to persuade him that there’s more to life than boyish games. Komeda’s music is actually the real star of the film, as it fulfils the role of an unseen “player” inasmuch as the music actually propels the action along.
Twinned with this release is music from another Skolimowski movie, Bariera. An allegorical tale of life in Warsaw in the early 1960’s when its youth was straining under the weight of communist restrictions. Packed with dark humour, the slender story is about a boy who falls in love with a female tram driver. The film is well worth seeking out, and deserves (in this writer’s opinion) to be re-released. It shows an early, and much-assured style by Komeda who is not afraid to try out very different styles. Borrowing from Nino Rota and other Italian composers of the era, it is a highly accomplished and approachable score. A fully illustrated and interesting essay accompany the booklet with special notes also in Japanese. FIRST TIME ON CD!"
