No doubt: the Stuttgart piano player and composer Wolfgang Dauner is one of the most important figures of the jazz scene in Germany. He left his footprints by – more than oftenly – breaking new ground. In December 2010 Dauner celebrates his 75th birthday.
His trio with Eberhard Weber and Fred Braceful, his band Et Cetera with Larry Coryell and Jon Hiseman, the all-star United Jazz + Rock Ensemble and duo collaborations with Albert Mangelsdorff and Jean-Luc Ponty are only some important steps of his musical stairway.
From the early 1960 years on he worked exclusively for the legendary German label SABA and its successor MPS, and recorded many albums in their legendary studios in Villingen/ Black Forest. When MPS shut down he moved forward by inaugurating a label fully controlled by musicians, in order to keep the same artistical freedom that he experienced with SABA/MPS.
Finally he returned to where it all began. Dauner went back to the MPS studios, which are nowadays appointed a cultural memorial, and recorded “Tribute To The Past”. So Dauner writes his musical autobiography, his pen being the very same Bösendorfer Grand Piano, that he and so many other famous artists used back in the MPS days. And, one can hear this clearly on this album, all three (maestro Dauner, the MPS studio, and the Bösendorfer) are still in very good shape!
