Best known as the antecedent to Goblin, Cherry Five had in fact been around for a number of years, also existing under the names of Oliver and Il ritrato di Dorian Gray.

The group's main inspiration has come from pre-Close to the Edge Yes, but at times there is more than a hint of bands such as ELP or Genesis.

The vocals are in English, with an accent that's not brilliant, but is at least tolerable.

The album itself is a collection of five songs ranging from seven-and-a-half to nine-and-a-half minutes. The awkwardness of fitting this onto vinyl necessitated a split in the middle of their third track, "The Swan is a Murderer."

A more perplexing facet of the album order is the fact that the best material appears almost exclusively on the first half of this album. Even on "The Swan is a Murderer," part 1 is far better than part 2.

The album's highlight is "The Picture of Dorian Gray." An orgy of symphonic rock clichés, the song's structure is so well balanced that it manages to avoid feeling too contrived. This is a song best listened to by abandoning your cynicism, and pretending that you're listening to Fragile for the first time again. By contrast, "Oliver" seems like a failed attempt to capture the essence of "Heart of the Sunrise," in spite of some very good mellotron work. The final track on the album, "My Little Cloud Land," is perhaps the only one to suffer from poor vocals, and even then it is the twee lyrics that are the least appealing aspect.

Cherry Five are an excellent group of musicians, especially Claudio Simonetti, whom I would rate as in the same league as Rick Wakeman. Despite being highly derivative, Cherry Five managed to put out a fine album. Perhaps they managed to find their own voice better writing horror soundtracks as Goblin, but this album is still a great testament to the incredible depth of the Italian progressive rock scene.

Claudio Simonetti, keyboards; Massimo Mornate, guitars; Carlo Bordini, drums, percussion; Tony Tartarini, vocals
