Le Stelle Di Mario Schifano-ITALIAN PSYCHEDELIA

Le Stelle di Mario Schifano

Dedicato A...

Psychedelic  Music from Italy

NEW AND SEALED CD IN Papersleeve MINI LP REPLICA

Psychedelia, avant-garde, improvisation, underground. “Dedicato A…” (Dedicated to…) is without a single doubt a unique record, and it’s really surprising to know that its authors were Italian, from Rome, and that it was released in 1967, the same year of “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” and “Sgt. Pepper's”!

Mario Schifano was not a musician but a visionary exponent of Pop Art, a sort of Italian Andy Warhol, who wanted to integrate his work with a group, providing the psychedelics visuals in support of live performances. The meeting between Schifano and the four musicians then baptized “Le Stelle di…” (The stars of...) yielded a handful of live concerts, a 45rpm and this album: perhaps dated now, but at the time almost no-one in Italy had ever heard something like that, unless he had flown to England to soak up the atmosphere of the ‘Swingin' London’.

“Dedicated to...” opens with a long passage of nearly twenty minutes, an acid jam sessions, sometimes delirious, which gives an idea of the potential of the group on stage, while the second half of the work consists of five short songs, more rational but still in line with the overall sound. It was an isolated experiment, which had no equal in Italy in those years; printed in a handful of self-produced copies, with a ‘stellar’ artwork by the same Schifano, is one the rarest Italian LP of all times.

Papersleeve Edition CD.

"Mario Schifano was for "Le Stelle" ("The Stars") what was Andy Warhol for The Velvet Underground.

This pop-art sculptor and painter formed the group in 1967 and recorded this masterpiece in Rome.
The first side, the 18 minute surreal - psychedelic  jam "Last Words of Brandimarte"  is  one of the classic tracks."

Rarely you can find, in the panorama of the Italian 60¿s, a group so innovative and so diverse. ¿Le Stelle¿ (¿The Stars¿), released in 1967, was the work of Mario Schifano, the amazing painter and sculptor of Italian Pop who brought together four young, unknown musicians and vocalist Francesca Camerana on some tracks. Originally released on the tiny BDS label, only 500 copies were initally pressed (some of which on red vinyl). The cover art, by Schifano, is a sublime example of pop art, rich in stars (appropriate for the group¿s name). Side one features ¿Le Ultime Parole Di Brandimarte¿ (¿The Last Words Of Brandimarte¿) with guest musician Peter Hartman. This piece represents the most avant-garde moments of the work, with its surreal atmosphere, more in line with a contemporary musical performance than psychedelic rock. Side two contains five tracks that offer a view of the group¿s wonderful abilities in a largely pop context.

Rarely can you find, in the yet fertile ground of the Italian 60's, a group so innovative and so diverse from all of the other ones from that era.

The concept of "Le Stelle" ("The Stars") came about in 1967, and was the work of Mario Schifano, the amazingly talented Italian Pop painter and sculptor, who collected alongside himself four young, unknown musicians. For the recording sessions "Dedicated A...". the body of the group was augmented, with the inclusion of vocalist Francesca Camerana and a few more musicians.

The final results of this session were published by B.D.S., a small label distributed by CGD, at the end of 1967, with an extremely limited pressing of 500 copies, some of which on red vinyl. The cover art, created by Schifano, is a sublime example of pop art. LE STELLE DI MARIO SCHIFANO "Dedicato a ¿.. - LP

A fan of New York¿s pop culture and beat music, Schifano decided to form a rock group after a visit to Swinging London during the era of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Rather along the lines of Andy Warhol, who had discovered and produced the Velvet Underground, Le stelle di Mario Schifano (Mario Schifano¿s Stars) were born, and came out with their Dedicato a¿ album in 1967. The music was dissolute and discordant, characterised by a progressive rock that was totally outside the experience of the Italian music scene. The ¿Star¿ cover designed by Schifano himself is dense with references and aspirations: the stars on the US flag painted by Jasper John in his Flag cycle; the stars on the newly-inaugurated Hollywood Walk of Fame and those in the artist¿s own personal star system, to whom the album is dedicated.
