A great compilation of the rare early-to-mid 60s Detroit soul singles from the largely underappreciated Melvin Davis – stellar 45 tracks cut for the Jackpot, Fortune, Ke Ke, Wheel City and Groovesville labels – include a handful of previously unreleased numbers!

Melvin is possibly best remembered by the Northern Soul community – and with good reason – the rollicking, floor-shaking groove of many of these numbers is incredible.

That said, there's a unique, gritty and tight underbelly to these recordings that's unlike more common Northern soul fodder, and he can bring the sweetness when he wants to, as he does on a few slower numbers.
