Winds & Skins -- The Swedish Radio Recordings 1978

Sabu Martinez & Sahib Shihab
A rare meeting between percussionist Sabu Martinez and reedman Sahib Shihab -- both American players, but working here in a really unique European setting! The tracks are filled with great percussion from Sabu -- that legendary groove he first laid down on Blue Note and Alegre albums years back -- handled here in a more open, searching sort of way, with a range of great percussion effects in the mix -- thanks to the presence of some additional percussionists as well. Sahib Shihab plays both sax and flute -- blowing lines that fall into the more exotic side of his talents -- quite different than his straighter jazz work, and a great reminder that he can really have a deep conception, when heard in the right setting.
Overall, the sound is quite spare -- heavy on percussion, with a bit of bass -- then giving way to reeds from Shihab -- and
titles include "Nus", "A Memo To Art Blakey", "The Distorted Sioux Indian", "Ghandi's Candies", "Arroz Con Leche", and "Sondagsbladet" -- which is a bonus trio track from 1967, featuring sax from Christer Boustedt instead of Shihab

Recorded 13th of December 1978 (exactly one month before Sabu's untimely death). On the Winds and Skins recording Sahib Shihab delivers some of the funkiest and most mind-blowing notes ever performed on an electrified sax, steadily backed up by five suggestive percussionists. The myth that Sahib Shihab never played electrified sax can hereby once and for all be dismissed! A more unique session has never taken place in Sweden. Two top giants in the world of jazz goes berserk in the very end of their lives! The line-up: Sabu Martinez: Bongos, congas, bukoba, talking drums, tympani, gong, all sound and percussion effects / Sahib Shihab: Sax & flute / Johnny Martinez: Various drums & percussion / Rene Martinez: Various drums & percussion / Daoud Amin: Various drums & percussion / Ivan Krillzarin: Various drums & percussion. The circle will be closed through the bonus track. These bonus track includes the very first session that Sabu Martinez recorded in Sweden. He recorded this tune for a radio program just after his departure to Stockholm 1967. By his side he had Christer Boustedt on sax and Palle Danielsson on double bass.
