BANDA UNIAO BLACK-YeahYeahYeah-60s Brazilian Soul 7"
BANDA UNIAO BLACK 'Yeah Yeah Yeah'
NEW (7") SINGLE
¿If you could have seen the black kids in Rio during the 60s¿ It was horrible. They all went around on the street hunched over with their heads hanging down. Then James Brown came around, Wilson Picket, and all the rest. We would dress and act just like them; that was how we learned to feel proud. We loved the energy of those American blacks. James Brown was our Martin Luther King¿ - Ivan Tiririca, Drummer for União Black.
Tim Maia and Cassiano of União Black found themselves among the creators of Brazilian Soul at the end of the 60s; they were the ones to set the stage for the Black Rio or Black Power movement. Ivan Tiririca, the band¿s drummer, was also an official Soul DJ for all the Rio parties. The movement was short lived but it left a deep mark on musicians and the public that followed it. Today, interest has been revived thanks to an anthology ¿ the labor of DJ Cliffy in England-, and a movie called ¿Brasilintime¿ starring Black Rio musicians and the DJs Cut Chemist and Madlib.
