 Film's Storyline:
 
The raid platoon of the marines has one hero, Sergeant Chet Costa, who is still alive and a whole lot of heroes who have died during various spectacular missions, like the complete destruction of a Vietcong base. He feels quite lonely after the disappearance of Isabelle, the woman he loves, after she had been accused of trying to prise information out of him. He becomes ugly, is costantly drunk and takes a prominent part in most of the savage brawls. In order to save him from a worse fate, Colonel Abrahms sends him on a mission into the jungle for the last time. Chet gathers together a platoon of young reclutes and former jailbirds like the negro "smile", all of whom hate him. The helicopters get shot down and the marines get hunted down in the jungle until they manage to get in touch with the guerilla fighters who help them to destroy a huge bridge which is of vital importance to the enemy. Chet has an unexpected surprise: Isabelle is with the guerrilla fighters. The Vietcong killed her family and so she chose fighting instead of love. The destruction of the bridge is total, but Isabelle gets captured by the Vietcong. Chet and his men transform the whole enemy town into a tremendous bonfire, blowing up deposits of petrol and ammunition, and the railway; taking advantage of the chaos, they snatch the girl from her jailors, but Isabelle dies. Chet and "smile" are the only survivors; but then the negro tries the desert and gets killed by the Americans. So only Chet gets back home, just a few days before the end of the war.
