Honey Drippers & The Pegalo Singers

Brazil 71

new cd in digipack

A groovy set to rival the greatness of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66 -- but one recorded in Europe with a slightly different vibe!

The format's a weird one -- as the core sound is modly swinging soul jazz, with some nice solo parts on flute or trombone -- but it's also sometimes topped off with ensemble vocals that go for the sunny bossa bounce of Brasil 66 -- and these two modes play back and forth throughout the course of the album, making for a nicely expanded kind of groove!

The session's got roots in the massive sound library of producer Hans Wewerka -- responsible for many classic German jazz recordings of the 60s and 70s, but posing here as arranger/conductor Derrick Mallot -- and although the players aren't noted, they're all pretty great -- as are the male and female singers who work on the record.

If you're looking for comparisons, we might say that the work's similar to some of the German bossa on Selected Sound or MPS labels from the time -- and titles include the originals

"Sweet Habanera", "Johnny Boy", "Sun Will Rise Again", and "Light Blonde Girl" -- plus versions of "Work Song", "Taste Of Honey", "Yesterday", and "Girl From Ipanema".
