“Mr. Black Forest“ – that’s what American music lovers nick named Horst Jankowski. Not just because he once composed the unforgettable classic “Schwarzwaldfahrt”. 1936 born Jankowski (hey, we might celebrate his 75th birthday to date!) was a kind of jack-of-all-trades. Constantly present on German TV …at a time, when music has been an integral part of the show… he feared to be labeled, and by that composed, arranged, produced, and conducted everything that he defined as entertainment. And if it were solely for his own entertainment, whether it’s Jazz, Pop, Easy Listening – you name it – he was the man.

Jankowski learnt to play piano, trumpet and horns, forming his own first sextet when he was 15, and accompanying the likes of Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Caterina Valente, Erwin Lehn – to name a few. Mentioning Oscar Peterson: way before Oscar, legendary producer and sound engineer Hans-Georg Brunner-Schwer invited Horst to his Black Forest place way back in the Fifties in order to play at his first, now legendary, house parties.

Horst Jankowski, considered to be too commercial by some jazz “purists“, was a truly fantastic piano player. And we are proud to be able to present his skills in full, backed by a German all star band that consisted of seminal guitar player Sigi Schwab, bassist Hans Rettenbacher of Dave Pike Set fame, and drummer virtuoso Lala Kovacev. This recording, actually a night session at Jankowski’s own studio from 1971, is a class of its own, and surprisingly was forgotten to be released by MPS in the first place – although it has been archived as catalogue number 15310 already. Ample research in the MPS vaults finally made it to see the light of day some forty years later. And is now released just like an original, with (besides recording, of course) mixing and mastering done fully analogue. In other words: truly “triple A”.
