Burned Sugar -- The Swedish Radio Recordings 1973

Sabu Martinez
Amazing lost funk from Sabu Martinez -- rare work recorded in Sweden in the early 70s, and some of his heaviest work ever -- as great, if not better than, his legendary Afro Temple album! The tunes are all long and very jamming -- fierce Latin funk numbers that feature Sabu on a range of percussion instruments -- alongside lots of electric piano, plus sax and flute from Swedish jazzman Bernt Rosengren -- who's pretty great too!
In addition to congas, Sabu also handles talking drums, gong, and bongos -- plus a range of other percussion effects too -- all heard to great form on the 17 minute jammer "Burned Sugar", plus the cuts "Bernt" and "Mambollo". CD also features the bonus "Polyvox Jam (parts 1 & 2)" -- plus the short spoken cut "Education".

Burned Sugar was recorded live in front of an audience at the Swedish Radio (Stockholm) in april 1973. These recordings are something really spectacular. The line-up: Sabu Martinez: Bongos, congas, bukoba, talking drums, tympani, gong, all sound and percussion effects / Bernt Rosengren: Sax & flute / Wlodek Gulgowski: Electric piano / Stephan Moller:Drums / Mr X: Electric Bass. The bonus tracks includes a top secret and never ever officially played tape called "The Polyvox sessions. Recoreded during the summer of 1974.

Subtitled "The Swedish Radio Recordings 1973"
Recorded at the Swedisch Radio in Stockholm, April 12, 1973.

The liner notes of this release refer to the bass player on these tracks as "Mr. X", explaining that after years of research, the publishers had not been able to identify the artist. In 2009, Mellotronen released "The Dalecarlia Recordings 1971-72" by Sabu. In the linernotes accompanying that release the mystery about the bass player "Mr. X" is solved, and the true line-up of the Burned Sugar sessions are given. Those credits are entered here as well, though "uncredited".
